iHigh Virtual Academy (iHVA) is a new, innovative public high school providing students individualized opportunities to earn a high school diploma through accredited online courses and resources. iHVA provides a rigorous, college-preparatory online school program that meets the needs of today’s learners and prepares graduates for successful, post-secondary learning and careers in a global marketplace. Students complete their coursework in a self-directed, teacher-facilitated environment. Students study at their own pace anywhere, anytime and anyplace.
While most attendance, teacher interaction, and daily lessons are conducted online, students use physical lesson materials, offline tools and will meet face to face with their instructors. In addition to providing individualized learning, as an online public high school, iHigh Virtual Academy provides the structure, administrative support, oversight, accountability and state testing required of all public schools.
Some of the advantages of a iHigh Virtual Academy are: the ability to work from home; a flexible schedule; access to iHigh Virtual Academy curriculum seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. As well as, full-time students are offered a district loaned laptop with wireless and Internet capabilities.
Method of Instruction
The method of instruction we use at iHigh is independent study/home study. All students have a supervising teacher who facilitates enrollment, distributes materials, coordinates students studies and collects student work. The parent, student and supervising teacher sign agreements that outline what is to be studied and when the work is due. Students also have subject expert teachers who teach study groups and assess student work. Students may attend study groups on campus for additional direct instruction, collaborative learning and enrichment. Parent involvement and collaboration is a key factor in helping students to achieve and be successful.
Students at iHigh Virtual Academy will use the APEX Learning program for their courses. There are 120+ online courses to suit a student’s unique interests and goals. Along with the supervising teacher, who will oversee all student work, and a local San Diego Unified School District subject expert teacher, students will have an APEX subject expert teacher. The APEX teacher will be the subject teacher while the SDUSD teacher will provide guidance and direction for student’s success.
